Junior Athletes Shine at County Championships

The County Championships are an early highlight of the Track and Field season and this years Norfolk County Championships was held at the UEA Sportspark, Norwich.

Representing Thetford AC in the under 13 boys age group was Daniel Clouston. Dan competed in the 1500m and finished in 6th place (5:33.2).

In the U13 girls Isabel Smythe finished 3rd (2:41.2), earning her a bronze medal in the 800m and booked a place in the 200m final where she raced to a 6th place finish (30.7).

Bethany Wilson entered the 1500m and came a highly respectable 6th place (5:43.0).

Also in the U13 girls Alicia-Mae Howard finished 4th in both the Javelin (14.49m) and Shot Putt (4.62m) as well as finishing 16th in the Long Jump (2.97m).

There was a trio of medals for Asha Soanes in the U15 age group. Asha came 3rd in Long Jump (4.69m), 3rd in Javelin (21.49m) and 2nd in the Shot Putt (9.20m).

In the U15 boys Cameron Try had a great Championships with a hat-trick of gold medals across the throws events. He gained 1st places in Shot (12.01m), Hammer (30.39) and Discus (39.07m).

Elsewhere in the U15 boys age group, Josh McGuire made the final of the 100m where he finished in 8th place (13.8).

The sole Thetford athlete in the U17 girls age group was Jessica Norkett. Jess finished 3rd in the 1500m (4:46.0) in a race which saw all of the first three athletes breaking the County Championship record. She then followed this up with a 2nd place finish in the 800m (2:19.3).

In the U17 boys age group Ben Garrod made it through to the final of the 400m where he finished in 6th place (58.8).

Floyd Scott came 4th in his heat in the 200m (25.8).

There was a gold medal and 1st place finish for Joseph Nicholson in the U20 men’s Hammer event  (46.19m) and a 2nd place finish for Jordan Turner in the U23 men’s Hammer competition.

 

Across the border two Thetford AC Athletes were successfully competing in the Suffolk County Championships. James Peck finished 2nd in the U15 boys 1500m (4:32.6) whilst his brother Ben took the gold medal in the U13 boys 1500m (4:47.1).

Both the Norfolk and Suffolk County Championships proved highly successful for the Thetford athletes with many PB’s and medals won. Through their performances, several athletes have also now qualified to represent their county at the upcoming South of England Inter-Counties Championships.
