Thetford Juniors in National Championships

After achieving the required entry standard for the England Athletics National Track and Field
Championships, three Thetford athletes earned the right to be part of, and compete against the
best young athletes in the country.
This years National Championships were held at the Bedford International Athletics Stadium
over two days.
Day one of the Championships saw Jessica Norkett compete in the U17 women’s 1500m. Jess
came home a credible 14th place in the 1500m final, holding her own amongst a strong field.
The National title was taken by Olivia Mason from Cumbria, who is a regular England U18
representative, in a time of 4:33.
Day 2 proved a difficult day for all of the athletes due to the wet conditions which made it far
from ideal for competing. Asha Soanes competed in the U15 girls shot Putt. Like all events,
Asha was up against top quality competition and put in a great performance finishing in 12th
place with a best throw of 9.29m. The event was won by Havering AC athlete Omolola Kuponiya
with a throw of 12.15m.
Cameron Try was next up in the U15 boys Discus competition. Cameron was highly ranked
going into the competition and proved this with a fantastic 7th place finish, throwing the Discus
out to 36.39m. The U15 Discus championship was won by Dillon Clayton from Blackheath and
Bromley with a throw of 43.49m.
All of the athletes have worked extremely hard throughout the season to achieve the qualifying
requirements and should be extremely proud of themselves. They have represented themselves
and the club impeccably.
